Did You Know?

Along with its sisters Silvacane and Sénanque, the Thoronet Abbey is one of the three Cistercian wonders of Provence. Work on the construction of Notre-Dame-du-Thoronet Abbey began in 1160 and was completed in 1175. At the beginning of the 13th century, the monastery housed about twenty monks. In 1790, only seven monks were still living there. The abbey was about to disappear when novelist, Prosper Mérimée, rediscovered. it and saved it by reporting it to Revoil, architect of historical monuments who began restoring it in 1873.
